In 2009, a Spanish-French journalist/documentary maker was killed by gang members whom he thought he had befriended around the time that his documentary «La Vida Loca,» was released. This was big news in Europe which statistically has a lower Salvadoran population than the U.S. Obviously much of the publicity in the case was promulgated because the journalist was from Europe. However, it was also was an international commentary on the randomness of violence as well as the viciousness of this murder in El Salvador.
Subsequent to this tragedy, it seems to be that the violence has only gotten worse even though Honduras has higher homicide rates per capita. As William Brownfield, a member of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace stated after conducting research on the issue of counter narcotics trafficking and Central America, «Central America is a victim of geography.» Being in-between North America and South America has put Central America and El Salvador specifically in a continually precarious state dispositioned to violence. It has historically been recognized as a territory inundated by civil conflicts that escalated into major wars a generation ago.
Much like the position of the current president of the U.S., President Mauricio Funes inherited a lot of the social and economic problems which have been persistent in El Salvador through previous administrations. Therefore, I would not categorically summarize the Funes administration as «fracazado» or as a failure. Nevertheless, I do believe the rate of violence MUST be brought down in order for his legacy as the first democratically-elected president coming from the political left to not be tarnished by the horrific violence affecting innocent Salvadorans every day.
